Director of Technical Theatre

The position is responsible for assisting the executive director and department chair in the coordination, supervision, and management of the Theatre & Film Department. This position includes specialized teaching work performed in both an educational setting and professional theater setting. The Technical Director is responsible for planning, teaching various classes in technical theatre (i.e., construction, design, lighting, sound, scene painting, etc.), assessing student work, preparing for and running live performances, fostering community partnerships and guest artists, supporting the department at community festivals in which students perform, and conferring with families, students, and colleagues. In addition, this position is responsible for helping to recruit and retain part-time faculty to support the technical track of the Theatre & Film Department. The Technical Director is responsible for leading the department in setting high expectations for students and helping students meet those expectations through communicating clear goals, scaffolding instruction, defining levels of achievement and encouraging student reflection.

 

Examples of Duties

  • Assist the executive director and the department chair in the developing and maintaining of a rigorous technical theatre program.

  • Assist the executive director and the department chair in the administration of the department; enforce school policies and procedures.

  • Deliver classroom instruction and assess student work.

  • Support department chair in efforts to secure and monitor adjunct faculty.

  • Maintain a good working relationship with local arts organizations.

  • Support the department chair in efforts to plan, secure and schedule guest artists for the department.

  • Assist in developing the instructional master class schedule for the department.

  • Oversee students’ attendance, academic progress and juried evaluations and reviews.

  • Recruit, audition and selection of potential students for the program.

  • Maintain the GSA Black Box Theater, GSA Scene Shop, and other preparation and performance spaces, as needed.

  • Maintain tools, lighting instruments, and other theatrical infrastructure throughout the facility.

  • Requisition of supplies and equipment, conduct inventories, maintain records and check on receipts for such materials.

  • Work with the department chair in overseeing the department’s annual operational budget, as well as individual performance budgets.

  • Assist with coordinating shows and community performances including the casting and rehearsal processes, securing performance space and staff, and supervising students at events (both GSA and community events).

  • Assist in coordinating transportation and other school support services.

  • Help conduct safety inspections and safety drill practice activities within the department.

  • Schedule and conduct parent-teacher conferences.

  • Additional duties as assigned by the executive director and department chair.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Tuberculin Skin Test certifying that the individual is free of contagious tuberculosis.

  • In-depth knowledge of technical theatre including (but not limited to) costuming, construction, design, lighting, sound, special effects.

  • Professional experience as a Technical Director preferred.

Physical Effort

Above-average amount of walking, climbing, bending, standing, stooping, and lifting in scene shop and professional theater settings. Ability to lift scenery and lighting units onto ladders. Ability to operate power tools.

 

Hazards

Work involves exposure to normal everyday hazards. Position is responsible for outlining, promoting, and monitoring safe practices in relation to the use of potentially hazardous tools, scenic materials, equipment, and facilities.

Work is required in educational and performance settings. Individual may be required to lift, move and transport scenery, costumes, lighting units, and other materials required for successful productions. Individual may be required to climb ladders and use power tools, while teaching and supervising students to do the same.

Job Description

This is a part-time position that is not eligible for Benefits. This position is scheduled to work 5 hours per day, 5 days per week. 

 

General Responsibilities

 

This position is for ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors in an assigned school.  The work involves being highly visible in the halls, parking lots, cafeteria, rest rooms, grounds, stairwells, and other locations for the purpose of ensuring order and discipline, preventing crime, investigating criminal acts, and detaining and apprehending persons violating the law on school premises.  The work requires excellent rapport with students to encourage proper behavior and cooperation with school administrators and law enforcement agencies in accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulations. The worker selects and applies appropriate effective methods of crime prevention, intervention, and enforcement in different situations.

 

Education and Experience

 

Requires a high school diploma or possession of a GED and a valid driver’s license. Some college level course work is not required but welcomed.  Training with the police department or recent law enforcement experience is also welcomed.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists school administrators in the prevention of personal injury, property loss and disruption of the educational process through daily operations including routine patrol, crime prevention, surveillance, investigation, emergency response, recovery of property, and related activities.

  • Patrols assigned buildings as a visible force to prevent student disruptions, vandalism, illegal entry and other activities that detract from the care, welfare, safety and security of all students, staff and guests of NPS.

  • Queries visitors on school premises and assures that such visitors comply with proper NPS policies and procedures.

  • Confronts unauthorized persons for questioning, escorts individuals off school property or detains them for police assistance, as needed.

  • Patrols at night functions such as meetings, student activities, special programs, etc., as requested or scheduled.

  • Enforces Regional Board and school policies and procedures regarding the conduct of persons on school property.

  • Maintains a high level of visibility as students arrive and depart from school and as they move about during the school day.

  • Participates in random inspections, conduct metal detector screening for weapons and forbidden objects, and completes supporting documentation.

  • Participates in the conduct of fire drills.

  • Offers testimony in court or before the Regional Board as necessary and obtains petitions and warrants.

  • Assists Executive Director and staff in stopping altercations, arguments or other forms of disruptive or illegal behavior.

  • Maintains alertness to illegal substances or weapons being carried or stored on school property.

  • Renders first aid and CPR as appropriate; collaborates with and assists public safety (police, fire, EMT) personnel who respond to calls at school or school functions held at locations throughout the community.

  • Prepares required written reports of incidents and disciplinary referrals as necessary and keeps records.

  • Performs physically strenuous activities required to identify, detain, and apprehend intruders and trespassers. Activate / deactivate smoke/fire/intrusion alarm system and secure doors.

  • Performs other duties, as necessary, to provide school security and safety to the fullest extent possible. 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Good knowledge of standard security procedures and the regulations and laws relating to school building and grounds conduct and building intrusion and trespassing.

  • Good knowledge of security/law enforcement principles and practices.

  • Good knowledge of the laws of arrest, the court system and procedures.

  • Good knowledge of the attendance policies and overall rules and regulations of The Governor’s School for the Arts.

  • Some knowledge of techniques of investigations and report writing and the ability to orally present testimony regarding the facts.

  • Some knowledge and understanding of child/adolescent growth and development, as appropriate to assignment.

  • Some knowledge of and ability to use drug test kits and alcohol breath kits.

  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with students, faculty, administrators, law enforcement agencies, and the general public.

  • Ability to exercise good judgement under potentially dangerous conditions.

  • Ability to maintain records and write security reports; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to read and understand laws, policies, rules and regulations and procedures, and to follow written and oral directions.

  • Ability to maintain effective rapport with students, staff, administrators, and general public.

Physical Attributes

  • Ability to perform exterior checks on foot which may require crossing areas with heavy traffic  and may be poorly lit.

  • Ability to stand at assigned station and/or patrol halls for considerable periods of time.

  • Ability to climb several flights of stairs.

  • Ability to tolerate use of protective masks and gloves.

  • Sufficient mobility and dexterity to respond quickly to student incidents or intrusion which may involve measures to detain individuals who are running away, jumping fences or barriers.

  • Sufficient strength to restrain/detain aggressive students, intruders and trespassers who physically resist.

  • Must pass continuing physical agility tests.

License/Certification

Must successfully complete a security certification course given by Norfolk Public Schools within ninety (90) days from date of employment.

Possession of a Conservator of the Peace CPR Certificate.

Registration as an Officer of the Court.

 

Hazards

Security Officers are subject to the ongoing hazards which are endemic to security work and public health-safety protection work; the work involves the potential for danger and physical injuries from trespassers, students or others with weapons, or persons committing acts which are violations of law, requiring sufficient training in restraint techniques to avoid personal harm and bodily injury.

 

Unusual Demands/Special Requirements

  • Must be subject to and pass continuing criminal records checks and drug/alcohol testing.

  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.

  • Work is subject to immediate response to an emergency in any part of the location assigned or any other location used by The Governor’s School for the Arts as needed.
